22: Haigo Gatame
While kesa gatame is the hardest hold to escape, haigo gatame (rear mount) is the most dangerous position to be held in. Tori can choke, strike, and submit uke, and there is little uke can do in return.
It is possible to escape haigo gatame, if you’re lucky and quick about it.
Your first priority has to be to protect yourself. You are in a bad position, and a choke takes only seconds to work. You cannot fight one effectively once it’s on, so start by defending your neck. Tucking your chin to your chest will be remarkably effective at keeping a respectful opponent from choking you. Keep your arms in tight to your body and use both hands to make space if your opponent gets an arm around your neck.
Once you’ve protected yourself, roll to your back and to one side and pin your opponent’s thigh under your hip. Start rolling towards him—not away. If you roll away, you will make things much worse. Roll to the skyward side, keeping that leg pinned. Pinning his leg eliminates his ability to control your hips, and you can usually rotate towards him. You will end up either in his guard or scrambling for position, but you will have escaped a very dangerous place.
Another possibility is an escape I lose to all the time. When your opponent reaches over your shoulder for a choke or to hold you, grab his wrist. Pull it off your chest and over your head. Then turn towards his arm, spinning in his lap. You should end up in his guard.
